This is a page of statistics derived from the NationStates Feeds. We had never downloaded all of them before. However, [violet] recently began making the entire World available in one download. Uusally we do things in XML, but sixty five plus megabytes of data is too unweildy to manipulate and aggregate using XML. So, we created a Microsoft SQL Server database and load it up every day. We insert the new records on top of the old ones. The ones that did not get an update are presumed to be dead and are moved to a "Dead" database in an abbreviated format where they will reside for ten days. Do not ask why, we just thought somebody might find something of value in there. We were initially quite excited by how fast it was - it only took thirty to forty minutes to load an empty database. It still only takes an hour to delete and add the daily records. Additionally, we found that the server could not handle doing sixty thousand deletes and inserts in a row. It would do it on a local machine in a development environment, but in the real world, our host was overwhelmed. So we had to chunk the gynormous file [violet] provides. It has all been great fun - not.

We took some of the elements we used to track in another of our tools called NSDossier and moved them here. In particular, we added the ability to see where you rank in The World in terms of size, for both regions and nations (just sort the Population Column). Also, we added a feature that we wish somebody else had added years ago - the ability to export the results to a spreadsheet. Almost all the data can now be exported and saved for your own personal usage.

Overall, this is just something to help us learn more about The World we live in. Some will find it interesting, others will yawn. It is still a work in progress. If there are some features you would like to see added, do not hesitate to leave a message on the comments page. Or, if you have anything to say about it, leave a message. We hope you like it.

1. The Category Section is a snapshot of the various statistics NationStates keeps on nations and regions. Currently, they are simple counts with percentages. We may add pie charts in the future. There are not many region distributions. We are open to suggestions if additional things are requested or needed.

2. The Dead Zone contains information about recently deceased nations and regions. It is purged daily and only seven days of information is retained. It does not contain all the information on a nation or region either, just the core information.

3. The World is like the NationStates pages for The Nations (http://www.nationstates.net/page=list_nations) and for The Regions (http://www.nationstates.net/page=list_regions). We added a little additional information to each of the listing as well as the ability to sort each column. Interesting information is revealed with creative sorting. Click on the column headers to sort.

4. Be aware, on the Export tool, if you want all nations, it is about an 12 megabyte download. Links now removed (except from Dead Nations - on To Do List).

5. The counts and latest data dates are at the bottom of the page.

6. We added region filters on all the sections where it would be practical. Put in a region name and the results will be just for that region. It only applies when you select Nations. Thanks New South Hell!

7. On The World list for Regions, you can now sort by Flag. Thanks Anime Daisuki!

10. more to come...

11. We hope you enjoy the tool.
